Sons of the Forest item IDs are used in console commands to spawn items in, handy cheats for specific weapons, armor and loot. It is not unfair to want; Sons of the Forest is a purposefully brutal survival game, and while some may enjoy the attempt to confront nature and cannibal mutants in a fair fight, we don’t blame others for wanting to even the odds a bit with some back-hacking of scenes.
If you want to do more than just add items to your inventory, our Sons of the Forest cheats guide has a more comprehensive look at what you can do if you want to make further changes to your game, but if you just want to fill your backpack of hacker’s gain, our guide on how to add items with Sons of the Forest item IDs will serve well.
Warning: If you enter the codes incorrectly, you risk losing your save, so make a backup of your save file before doing anything. With that in mind, change the game at your own risk!

How to add items in Sons of the Forest to your inventory
- Open Sons of the Forest, and go into the save game you want to add items to and save again (this isn’t necessary, but it will help you navigate files at a glance).
- Close Sons of the Forest completely! You should not do the rest of this while the game is open.
- Open File Explorer and look for the following: (C:) > Users > (your name) > AppData > LocalLow > Endnight > SonsOfTheForest > Saves.
- At this point you will be presented with a folder with a seventeen digit number which is actually your Player ID. Type it in.
- In this folder you choose either SinglePlayer or Multiplayerdepending on what kind of save file you want to add items to.
- Here you will be presented with a folder with a different number for each save file you have in Sons of the Forest. There’s no way to tell them apart – except that if you just entered the game file you want to edit, it should be the most recent! Sort them by “Date Modified” and open the most recent one.
- Go to PlayerInventorySaveData and open it in NotePad (or other plain text file editor).
- The string of text code represents the player’s inventory; what is in it and how much.
- Go to the end and look for a sequence of code that rounds off the file that reads “:[]}]}}”}}
- Enter the following code in the field highlighted in the image above so that it exactly matches what we have shown (or copy/paste this into the file shown):
,{\”ItemId\”:ItemIDHere,\”TotalCount\”:NumberOfItemsHere,\”UniqueItems\”:[]}
- Substitute Item IDs with the actual item ID, and Number of items here with how many of that item you want. There should be no spaces on either side of these numbers.
- If you already have the item and want to add more, don’t add a new code! Just look for the item ID and just adjust the number of items to match the amount you want.
- When you’re done editing the file, save it and close PlayerInventorySaveData (you don’t want the game and file open at the same time).
- Re-open Sons of the Forest and enter your saved game. Your edited inventory should now apply!
The sons of the forest guides
There are a few things to keep in mind, the big ones being: do not add more items to your inventory than the game can support! Certain special or key items players can only carry one at a time, while others can hold several. If something seems special, unique or valuable, such as the chainsaw, just give yourself one to keep – it’s not like you can use them twice, after all. For items like coins, leaves or consumables, don’t go crazy – keeping your inventory under 20 for the most part is a good idea. If you use up what you have on you can always go back to PlayerInventorySaveData and add more, after all.
How to find out item IDs in Sons of the Forest
If there’s a new item in Sons of the Forest you want to find out the ID of, there’s a way to do it, albeit a bit erratic. Find that object in the game, drop everything else in your inventory, exit the game and check the PlayerInventorySaveData file! Even if it doesn’t name the object specifically, you should be able to confirm the item by its number by removing the process.
Of course, if you’re more interested in finding this type of gear yourself without having to fiddle with code and files, we’ve created the Sons of the Forest item locations here.
