Home and interior design expert at beanbags.co.uk, Rosalind Peters, shared her top tips for removing “every make-up stain” from your carpet. She explained: “There are several ways to remove makeup stains from your carpet. Most of them involve the use of some kind of chemical product with varying degrees of success.”

She continued, “But if you use these methods incorrectly, they can make your spot worse!”

The expert shared “some golden rules” on how to get rid of makeup stains at home. Rosalind advised: “Always dab when cleaning a stain as this will help prevent the stain from spreading further, whereas drying will only spread it around more.

“You should also work from the outside of the stain towards the center, so you don’t stain anything else in the way. Also remember that some stains are more stubborn than others, so you may need to repeat this step several times until all traces of color are removed!

“If you use harsh chemicals, be sure they are safe to use on your surface. For example, bleach is not recommended for removing a stain on a carpet, as it can cause discolouration.”

How to remove foundation stains (water-based)

If foundation gets on the carpet, the expert advised to “act quickly as it naturally sets quite quickly”. It is important to take into account that if the foundation is water-based, “you should remove excess makeup with a paper towel, then rinse the area with warm water”.

The expert continued: “Then pre-treat the stain with washing up liquid by massaging it in. Leave the washing up liquid on the stain for 20 minutes to give it enough time to air dry.”

Rosalind warned: “Whatever you do, never use the heat of a hair dryer to speed up this process as this can cause a stain to set.”

And if all else fails, she suggested using an enzyme-based detergent as they are designed to break down protein stains like blood, sweat and urine without damaging textiles.


How to remove foundation stains (oil-based)

For oil-based foundation, Rosalind recommended, “The best chance of removing an oil-based makeup stain from a carpet is to act quickly by wetting the stained area with cold water.”

She explained that people should then add a few drops of Fairy liquid and let it sit on the stained area for a couple of minutes. “Next, use a microfiber cloth to gently dab. This in turn helps break up the oils in the foundation and helps it disappear.

“Finally, gently dry the stained area with a paper towel — and keep repeating until it’s gone,” she said.

How to remove lipstick stains

For lipstick stains, she recommended using a cloth dipped in warm water and dabbing it on the affected area “until the stain disappears completely.”

How to remove mascara stains

For mascara smudges, “use a cotton swab dipped in nail polish remover to dissolve the makeup and get rid of it completely,” she recommended.

Then you can simply clean up any remaining residue with another cotton swab dipped in baby oil or mineral oil.

How to remove eye shadow stains

Eye shadow contains a number of pigments that are difficult to remove from carpets and upholstery. “However, you need to act quickly when dealing with this type of stain or you risk getting it embedded in the fabric,” she warned.

But what is the easiest way to remove eyeshadow stains? Rosalind explained: “The first step is to blot the stain with cold water. This will help set the stain and make it easier to remove. She continued: “Once you’ve removed as much of the eyeshadow as possible with cold water, apply dish soap directly to the stained area and rub vigorously with your fingers until all traces of color are gone from the area. Rinse well. with cold water again after scrubbing to ensure that no soap residue remains.

“If you’ve lost a light eyeshadow, add toothpaste directly to the stain and rub it in with a damp cloth. But for darker stains, apply a little vinegar directly to the stain and leave it for about 30 minutes before scrubbing off with a wet rag. Both of these methods will work,” she said.

How to remove powder stains

People should start by vacuuming over the stain, then dampen a clean cloth or sponge with Fairy liquid and gently dab it over the stain. Continue to rinse the cloth and repeat this phase until the soap has disappeared.
