Goat Simulator 3 trailer earns Take-Two’s wrath for using GTA 6 leaks
A new ad for Goat Simulator 3 uses stolen GTA 6 footage, and Rockstar Games isn’t happy about it.
Remember when Goat Simulator 3 was announced during Summer Game Fest, parodying the old Dead Island 2 reveal trailer from 2014? It was a pretty fun subversion of expectations, which probably got more attention than a standard reveal trailer would have.
The game has been out for over a month now, and it looks like developer and publisher Coffee Stain Studios is looking to drum up some extra Christmas sales with yet another crack at viral marketing.
Although instead of making a parody trailer, Coffee Stain decided to push the boundaries of legality and show actual Grand Theft Auto 6 footage in its latest ad.
As a reminder, there are no official GTA 6 recordings at this time. However, back in September, Rockstar Games was hacked and videos and screenshots of unfinished gameplay were stolen and leaked online.
Unsurprisingly, the Goat Simulator 3 ad has since been removed from Twitter due to a “report from the copyright owner.”
An attempt to upload it to YouTube was met with the same result, with Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two Interactive explicitly issuing the copyright claim.
We weren’t able to see the trailer ourselves before it was taken down, but others who missed it are now desperately asking if anyone else has saved it.
Before anyone accuses Take-Two of not having a sense of humor, it must be emphasized that the GTA 6 footage was stolen and was never meant to be shown to the public. Coffee Stain Studios will have known that before posting the video, which makes it both highly illegal and highly cynical.
Take-Two and Rockstar toyed with the leaked footage when it first appeared, though to be honest none of it was very interesting and certainly not worth going to jail for.
Coffee Stain Studios posted a follow-up tweet to Ralph Wiggum’s ‘I’m in danger’ meme from The Simpsons after the video was removed.
However, we doubt this situation will be funny if Take-Two takes legal action against it, as they have done many times in far less defensible situations.
Goat Simulator 3 is available for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5 and PC.
