The gaming world has belonged to the big three in 2022, with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Fire Ringand God of War Ragnarok shoot, hack and slash your way to the top of the charts.

There is an obvious difference between commercial and critical success, but at least two of these games have been held up as some of the greatest games of all time.

While Modern Warfare 2 is a fairly standard Duty calls game, Fire Ring and Ragnarok brought something new to the fantasy genre. Still, they’re apparently not the “best” games of 2022.

If you look at Metacritic right now, the best games of the year are on all platforms The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. CD Projekt Red’s next-gen remaster is barely out, but it’s already risen to the top of Metacritic.

With a strong 97/100, this 2022 upgrade of the 2015 title seems to win everyone over. Considering the original is one of the best-selling games of all time and was equally praised for its content, was anyone really surprised?

In second place we have Portal Companion Collection (scores 96). These repackaged games brought Valve’s fan favorites to the Nintendo Switch. It’s wild to think that until a few days ago, this game would have won 2022 as its best game.

After these two goliaths, Fire Ring takes third, followed by Personas 5and then God of War Ragnarok. However, the top 5 surprises no one, Fire Ring and Ragnarok Ducking it out at the Game Awards for Game of the Year means you might have thought they’d place higher.

What will be the best game in 2023?

If we look at next year, there is stiff competition. Although we doubt anything will tip over Fire Ring as for its genre-defining legacy, there are still some juggernauts to come.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is sure to continue its success into 2017 Breath of the Wildwhile you also join in Zelda dynasty. We would also put money on Respawn Entertainment’s Star Wars Jedi: Survivor gives everyone else a run for their money.

Bethesda is trying something different The Elder Scrolls and Fall out with Starfield on Xbox, while PlayStation competes with this Final Fantasy XVI. Finally, let’s not forget Hand warts Heritage finally gets on the broomstick.

2022 may have given us a smorgasbord of games to enjoy, but it’s arguably nothing compared to what 2023 brings to the table.
