Mobile apps have become important tools for banking in today’s digital world. Today, every bank in Nigeria has more than one mobile app, all trying to make banking easier, faster and more convenient for their customers.

However, the customer experience on these apps is anything but perfect. While the apps meet customer expectations in some areas, they falter in many other areas.

This is why Nairametrics takes a look at the mobile apps of two of the leading new generation banks in Nigeria; Access Bank and GTBank. While the two banks have more than one app through which they serve their customers, AccessMore and GTWorld are the most prominent for these financial institutions.

What are the features of these apps? How have they fared in terms of size, number of downloads, reviews and user experience? What do users say? These and many more questions will be answered when we review these apps.

AccessMore’s features: Apart from the stylish and beautiful design, the AccessMore app, which is an upgrade to the regular Access Bank Mobile app, has a beautiful user interface that complements the simple navigation menu.

Features include quick account opening, personal theme and color selection, single click to all favorite features, own QR generation for intra-bank transfers, scan QR for payments, investment services and PayDay Loan.

  • The app also allows Dubai Visa applications and purchase of cinema tickets. It also provides simplified currency transfer service, airtime top-up and electricity bill payment, check services (new checkbook request, stop and confirmation check) and card services (new debit card request, card blocking and unblocking).
  • The app comes with a unique fingerprint authentication as an added security feature. Users of this app do not need a token to perform online transactions. The mobile app also offers a live chat feature that enables customers to get help anytime when they encounter any issues. It is a stress-free app that makes the customer feel at home. For example, you can order a fresh check book via the app without physically going to the bank.

GTWorld’s Features: Likewise, GTB’s GTWorld mobile app has a beautiful orange background design that makes it enticing and cool for the user to navigate and experience the unique features that the app brings. Logging in is easy, as it only requires an online banking ID and password.

  • Built on the back of the bank’s customer-centric digital strategy, GTWorld also features biometric authentication, such as facial recognition and fingerprints, which recognize a customer and adapt to how and when they want to bank.
  • The mobile banking app has a seamless transition to GAPS Lite, the online banking platform for small businesses that offers a flexible and secure channel to make payments and collections anywhere in the world.
  • Once you’ve logged into the app, you can view all your accounts (savings, current, fixed deposit, home) and perform other transactions such as money transfers, buying airtime and checking your daily transaction history.

The downloads: While the Apple Store does not show the number of downloads of an app on the platform, the Google Play Store shows that both AccessMore and GTworld are equal when it comes to the number of times the apps have been downloaded. Both apps have registered 1 million plus downloads on the Google Play Store.

The ratings: Based on the user experience, AccessMore is rated 4.5 out of 5 in the Google Play Store, while the rating in the Apple Store was 4.8. GTWorld on the other hand is rated 3.8 on the Google Play Store and 3.2 on the Apple Store. This shows that AccessMore is rated better on both platforms.

Number of reviews: In terms of number of reviews, AccessMore also fares better compared to GTworld. On the Google Play Store, the app has registered 202,000 reviews, while it has had 46,683 on the Apple Store. For GTWorld, the number of Play Store reviews was 22,000, while on the Apple Store it had recorded only 381 reviews.

Language preference: This feature, which gives users a choice of language for an app, is only available on the Apple Store, and the higher the number of languages ​​available for an app, the better for users. A look at the two apps shows that AccessMore is also better in this regard as it has 21 languages. GTWorld on the other hand has 9 languages.

Sizes of the apps: A major challenge for mobile users is memory space, especially Random Access Memory (RAM) which holds all the apps on a phone. A heavy-sized app takes up a lot of space on users’ phones and may not work optimally if the user doesn’t have enough memory, so the lighter an app is, the better.

Comparing the two banking apps, GTWorld is better in this regard as it is the lighter of the two. On the Google Play Store, the app is 49 MB, while it is 76 MB on the Apple Store. The AccessMore app is heavier and will take up more space on users’ phones. The app is 54 MB on the Google Play Store and 285.6 MB on the Apple Store.

Users’ experiences: Users of the apps have a mix of positive and negative experiences. We’ve highlighted our users’ reviews below.

Access multiple users: Robinson Samuel’s experience has been good, and according to him the app is great and ticks many boxes, but could be better in a few areas. He said:

  • “Beautiful UI and experience. Not too thick, not too loose. But the app has problems with fingerprint unlocking, as it takes about a minute to respond only to this app. Either way, it’s the best.”

For Emmanuel Kadiri, the app’s user interface and design are its biggest strengths, while its performance is poor. He said:

  • “I love the app’s beautiful design, superb user interface, perfect arrangement and great innovation, but the performance is extremely poor. Thank God I had kept the old app available all along. When this AccessMore app starts its usual misbehavior, I just quickly move to the old one and my transaction is done instantly. Now the old app doesn’t seem to work again when I tried to unlock it on my new device and it kept telling me I entered the wrong account number. So I have to stick with this one without an alternative.”

Olatunbosun Oyediran believes that the app’s user interface, although beautiful, is not user-friendly, especially for older users. He said:

  • – The interface is nice and colorful, but it is not simple enough for older people to understand. The bank’s customers are not young people and teenagers. I opened an Access Bank account and it is active and functional, I have my card and USSD banking works perfectly, but the AccessMore app is just useless on my phone. I can’t even see my account balance in the menu section let alone make transfers. When I want to make a transfer, it shows no account. And I linked my card and everything.”

GTWorld users: A GTWorld user, Jean E. is disappointed that he is unable to save any details for repeat transactions on the app. He said:

  • “I downloaded the app just a few days ago, but I didn’t see much difference from the previous one. I was hoping for an extra page to store my electricity meter number, cable TV number, top-up mobile number, etc. so that I don’t need to complete these every time I want to make a payment but check them out as saved recipients. This is no improvement for me.”

For Mohammed Bello, while he loves the user interface of the app, his inability to see transactions on a linked prepaid dollar card is a disappointment. He said:

  • “Nice interface. But unfortunately you can’t see transactions made on a linked prepaid dollar card. You can’t request statements for a linked prepaid dollar card. You can only do that for your main bank account.”

Johnson Olayemi is also happy with the app’s interface, but feels disappointed by the errors he experienced during transfers.

  • “The app’s interface is good, but errors like ‘cannot retrieve account details’ when transferring to another bank occur repeatedly. The app takes time to load and also takes longer to initiate transactions. Completing a transaction should take no more than 2 minutes if it was built to solve a problem,” he said.

Expert opinion: The founder of SalesUltimo, a chatbot and social media marketing software as a service, Bello Muritala, who uses the two apps, said that while the apps are not perfect, they facilitate banking transactions for users and could improve with updates.

  • “From the perspective of a software person that I am, the apps are not bad, although they could be better. I have an account with the two banks and use their apps. There are times when you do your transactions smoothly and seamlessly, and there are times you experience errors.
  • The fact is that every software developer tries to solve a problem and will not rest until such a problem is solved. Banks’ engineers are more limited to fixing all problems on the apps they put out there for customers; they keep working on fixing bugs and making the experience better, which is why they keep coming out with new updates,” hsaid e.

Bottom line: Despite some users’ complaints, both the AccessMore and GTWorld apps are great. However, there is always room for improvement, which is why continuous updating is necessary. It should also be noted that sometimes there are several other factors outside the app that affect the quality of users’ experience, and these vary from phone memory to the quality of the internet connection used for the transaction.
