According to reports, the businessman lost Rs. 99.50 lakh after his mobile phone was hacked. You should be careful because this can happen to you too. You should know how to stay protected.
The incident took place between 6 and 7 November. Once the hackers got control of the victim’s smartphone, they transferred money from his bank account to other accounts through online banking, according to information provided by Wagle Estate police station to PTI.
The dangers of online fraud
As the digital ecosystem becomes more connected, it has also allowed hackers to prey on victims and steal their personal information and money. But hackers are not superhuman. They can only access a device if a person does not secure their device. Often, hackers use phishing techniques where they lure the victim into entering a shady website. When they voluntarily reveal their passwords and usernames, hackers use this information to steal money. But there are things you can do to protect yourself. Check them out below.
How to protect yourself from hackers
- Keep your passwords a mix of numbers, alphabets and special characters to make them difficult to guess. Randomize these characters for better efficiency and keep them at least 8-12 characters long.
- Use two-factor authentication or, if possible, multi-factor authentication to have more obstacles before someone can hack into your account. Mobile OTP is a very good way to add layers to your password security.
- Change your password regularly so that even if your password is compromised, your account can be safe.
- Do not write down your passwords on check books, or any other bank account books or papers you have. Don’t send them on social media like WhatsApp, Facebook etc.
- Never open emails or messages that offer unrealistic things. Even if you open them, never click on any link they ask you to go to.
- Always make sure you have multiple layers of protection on payment apps.
- Never give out your account information to strangers in phone calls or messaging apps. Remember that a bank or other institute or company will never call to ask for these details.
