Most people know the story of David and Goliath, where a young boy defeats a giant with just a rock, using his trusty slingshot to hit the giant in the middle of his forehead. One of the messages that can be gleaned from this story is that it is important to remain resilient, even in the face of overwhelming odds.
The David and Goliath style battle is something that can be seen in many different video games as well as Bible stories. Regardless of the size or strength of the main character, there will usually be a boss much bigger and several times stronger than them, making winning these fights even more rewarding.
10/10 Bayonetta 3 – Bayonetta vs Stratocumulus
Whether it’s Infernal Demons or Angels of Paradiso, many of the enemies that Bayonetta must fight are large, and some of the largest can be found in Bayonetta 3. Along with new weapons and techniques, Bayonetta 3 includes a new enemy called the Homunculi, which is neither from Inferno nor Paradiso. These creatures are Bayonetta’s main opponents.
One of the game’s most intense David versus Goliath-style battles is when Bayonetta battles the colossal Stratocumulus. As seen in Chapter 9, Bayonetta and her third parallel world variant fight the creature alongside Malphas and The Phantom. It’s an epic battle that takes place both on land and in the air.
9/10 God Of War Ragnarok – Kratos and Atreus vs Garm
The god of war series, Kratos has battled many giant enemies, including the leader of the Titans, Cronos in what ended up being both a pretty epic and pretty rough boss fight. God of War Ragnarok continues the series’ rich tradition of gigantic boss battles.
The fight against Garm is one of the game’s most memorable boss fights, with Kratos and Atreus returning to Helheim to stop the giant wolf monster before it tears through the realms. The fight is intense and has some surprising twists. The end of the battle also marks a change for the better in the relationship between Kratos and Atreus.
8/10 Pokemon Sword & Shield – Trainers vs Gigantamax Centiskorch
Pokemon Sword and Shield introduced many things to the franchise, including a new region, new Pokemon, and two new concepts: Dynamax and Gigantamax. Both of these are transformations that players can apply to their Pokémon to make them grow large, increasing their HP and power. Some Pokémon can do a special transformation called Gigantamax, which not only makes them bigger, but also changes their appearance.
One of the largest Gigantamax Pokemon out there is Centiskorch, whose Gigantamax form is over 246 feet tall. Centiskorch was one of the wild Gigantamax Pokémon that could be caught during Max Raid Battles. It had a five star rating but only a 5% spawn rate.
7/10 Elden Ring – the tarn vs the god-devouring snake
It is a fairly common practice for the bosses in The soul bearer games to get huge, making just about every boss fight a David-versus-Goliath-style fight. One of the newest games in the series, Fire Ring, is no different. The God-Devouring Serpent is one of the game’s most memorable and visually intense boss fights.
The God-Devouring Serpent is an optional boss fight and is not required to complete the game, but it is a fight that should not be missed as a player. There is a massive snake in the pits of a volcano with a surprising second phase. Picking up the Serpent Hunter weapon before the fight makes it much easier to defeat from a distance.
6/10 The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Link vs Hinox
Link must fight a series of new enemies The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. One of the biggest of these new enemies is the Hinox: giant Cyclops-like monsters that players can find in forested areas throughout Hyrule.
They wear weapons around their necks as necklaces, and anyone who wants these weapons must defeat them in battle. The boss fight music when you fight these mini-bosses is epic and really encapsulates the feeling of fighting a giant creature.
5/10 Cuphead – Cuphead vs Grim Matchsticks
Cup head is a run-and-gun game with a classic cartoon animation that has players fighting against many bosses. Most of the bosses are larger than life and larger than Cuphead and his brother Mugman. However, the Grim Matchstick match is one of the toughest matches in the game.
Fighting this dragon may seem easy in the first phase, but the difficulty increases considerably in the second phase. His third phase is the hardest where he grows two extra heads and becomes a hydra. Each head throws a cluster of fireballs at the player in four different directions.
4/10 Asura’s Wrath – Asura vs Chakravartin
Asura’s Wrath is an action game that mixes sci-fi with Buddhist and Hindu mythology elements. Players control the protagonist Asura on his journey of revenge. Asura fights enemies of various sizes called Gohma, the largest of which is the size of a continent.
However, this gigantic creature pales in comparison to the Chakravartin boss, which is several times larger than the sun. The battle between Azura and Chakravartin continues into space where Chakravartin hurls asteroids, planets and even suns at Azura.
3/10 Resident Evil Village – Ethan vs Lady Dimitrescu
Resident Evil VillageLady Dimitrescu became an instant hit on the internet from the moment she was first revealed. Both her looks and height have made her one of the most iconic next-gen gaming characters. In her “human” form, she is not the tallest of them Resident Evil enemies, though she still stands at an impressive 9 feet 6 inches, making her taller than Mr. X, Tyrant, and Nemesis.
Having her stalk Ethan through the castle in her “normal” form is terrifying enough, but somehow Lady Dimitrescu manages to become an even bigger threat during her final boss fight. She mutates into a dragon-like monster that is as terrifying as it sounds.
2/10 Sonic Unleashed – Super Sonic vs Perfect Dark Gaia
Sonic Unleashed is it Sonic game that brought Sonic the Werehog into existence, a form that Sonic takes in nighttime levels. The game’s big boss is Perfect Dark Gaia, which is the final form of Dark Gaia.
The boss has several stages where players have to alternate between playing as Super Sonic and as Gaia Colossus. When using Super Sonic, players must avoid getting hit by Perfect Dark Gaia’s attack as it causes them to lose a lot of rings per hit.
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is less of a stealth game and more of a hack-and-slash title. The second game with Raiden as the main character, the story takes place sometime after Metal Gear Solid 4.
The final boss fight has Raiden fighting Armstrong, and the first phase of the fight has Armstrong controlling the massive Metal Gear EXCELSUS. The giant mech is slow, but its blows are very strong and players must either parry them or avoid them altogether.
