Wilco launches Quest Builder for businesses to showcase its software development tools

Leading development companies, such as CircleCI, New Relic, Armory and Permit.io, collaborate with Wilco on missions that use their tools to solve real-world problems

TEL AVIV, Israel, 6 December 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Wilco, the “flight simulator” for software developers, today announced the launch of Quest Builder. Any company can now build engaging missions where their developer tools are put to use to solve realistic software development challenges. This follows Wilco’s recent launch of its developer training platform, which offers training assignments in a real development environment, which quickly reached thousands of monthly users.

The startup market for developers is booming, with 37 billion dollars invested last year. Thousands of companies offer products aimed at making the lives of software developers easier, so it’s challenging for a tool to stand out. “Dev tools shine when used in the context of a complex dev environment or a large-scale production application,” said On Freund, co-founder and CEO of Wilco. “Demo sandbox apps and ‘Hello world’ tutorials don’t properly communicate the differentiators and value that a product offers. Developers need to get on the ground and use a product to solve a problem they’re facing to fully understand it . value.”

The Quest Builder allows any company to create a Wilco assignment that showcases their development tool. Assignments can recreate a software development scenario that highlights the specific pain point the tool addresses, allowing developers to see first-hand the products’ unique value in a lifelike setting. Early adopters of the editor include leading developer companies such as CircleCI, Armory, Xata and Permit.io. Four observability-focused missions by New Relic, a design partner, have already been completed by thousands of developers.

“Wilco’s platform simulates the complex day-to-day reality that developers face when building software as part of a team working on a large codebase,” said Tom Trahan, VP of Business Development, CircleCI. “With Wilco, developers clearly see how CircleCI can solve real-world technical challenges, in a way that just can’t be communicated through standard training. Whether while upgrading themselves, joining a new team or during continuous on-the-job training, we are excited for developers to engage with CircleCI within Wilco missions.”

Dev tool companies have created Wilco missions to achieve a variety of business goals, including using the missions as interactive tutorials that provide product training to new customers, and as powerful demos that allow sales prospects to experience first-hand how the tool solves a real-world problem. In addition, software development teams use the Wilco platform to bring new team members on board and allow them to gain experience with their technology stack, as well as help their engineers prepare for on-call shifts by solving simulated production problems.

“With the Wilco platform, we set out to create a ‘flight simulator’ for software developers to learn new skills or practice existing ones in the real world,” said Freund. “Thousands of developers of all backgrounds and skill levels have already been empowered by Wilco to unlock their full potential. The release of Quest Builder opens up the platform for industry-leading experts to contribute their knowledge and expertise. The release was met with an enormous amount of excitement from the developer community , teachers and top developer companies. We expect dozens of new assignments to be added in the coming months.”

“Armory is very excited to partner with wilco to create on-demand classes to teach continuous deployment,” said Stephen Atwell, principal product manager at Armory. “Wilco brings a new approach to learning by replacing a dry classroom experience with an interactive, daily story. Along the way, Wilco gamifies learning to provide rewards and leaderboards to students along the journey. These approaches combine to create a fun and compelling environment for students to learning by doing.”

As part of the release, Wilco is also announcing its first Web Creator Hackathon, which will take place between 8-28 January. You can find more information about it here.
